A sure sign of rheumatoid arthritis is symmetrical swelling. Let's say the joint in your left index finger swells up and soon after the joint in your right index finger swells, that's symmetrical swelling and can be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. Other symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints.
